What exactly is eczema?

Anyone can get atopic dermatitis (also called other kinds of dermatitis).  This is known to most people as eczema and can be due to a variety of reasons.  It usually appears to be a rash somewhere on the skin and is considered an inflammatory skin condition.  It can vary in hue depending on your skin tone.  The eczema also usually appears as tiny bumps that are small and usually raised off the skin a bit. Skin can be thick and can also be crusting in areas.  Sometimes it can ooze if the skin is broken due to the bumps in the area or picked at a lot of scratched.

Areas of eczema can also be quite itchy.  Blisters and skin infections can happen, if you don’t treat affected areas or tackle issues directly causing eczema to happen in the first place.  Severely dry skin and many times, scaly skin is also a factor in this condition that is very bothersome.

Eczema skin can look like:

  • Itchy
  • Red
  • Dry
  • Scaly
  • Tiny bumps
  • Inflamed areas
  • Thick areas or patches of skin

There are seven types of eczema:

  • Atopic dermatitis
  • Contact dermatitis
  • Dyshidrotic eczema
  • Nummular eczema
  • Seborrheic dermatitis
  • Stasis dermatitis

Who can develop eczema on the skin?

Anyone can have this skin condition.  Those who already suffer from severely dry skin and allergy issues as well as highly sensitive skin conditions can have a worse form of the condition.  People who have issues with circulation, heart conditions and diabetes can also have more problems with eczema flares.

Eczema flares can many times be genetic.  They can also be from allergies or irritants in or around the home, at work, while shopping, or it’s another condition that might have to do with your immune system not working well-enough or a condition or disease causing eczema to occur on the skin.

While anyone can get eczema those who already have skin issues like severe dry skin, and fair skin complexion are more prone to getting outbreaks of eczema on their body.  There is also a condition called a filaggrin (a skin protein mutation due to an allergy related gene) deficiency.  This condition makes your skin itchier than normal.  Essentially, the skin has a water loss issue that causes eczema due to the severe dryness of the skin.  Pellamex is a supplement that can improve this condition but discuss this issue with a dermatologist.

Main reasons for having eczema:

  • Immune system problems or activation of immune system; autoimmune diseases
  • Genetics and family history
  • Filaggrin deficiency (lack of hydration in skin)
  • Environmental issues that harm the skin
  • Irritants; chemicals is an example (try to use eco-friendly and healthier options rather than harsh chemicals in the house or your yard)
  • Allergens
  • Certain medications that could cause you to break out
  • Diabetes
  • Heart health issues
  • Circulatory issues
  • Gut health

When you have eczema, you’ll want to follow some basic tips so you don’t make your skin worse. If you do the wrong thing—like scratch an area too much, over-wash your body and face, don’t humidify your home in dry and cooler months and so on—you could be making your eczema issues much worse!

Home remedies and tips to follow:

  • In winter months, always have a humidifier running in main rooms of your home, especially at night in your bedroom or bedroom area hallway
  • Keep a good moisturizer cream or lotion around; water based products for great hydration, only (use a few times a day; this depends on how dry your skin is)
  • Use creams for anti-itch problem areas of skin
  • Take allergy medications, if these are severe triggers for you
  • You can scratch but don’t over-do it
  • Wash your body at least once a day; but if you are outside or inside and do excessive sweating you may need two baths or showers a day, always re-hydrate and lotion the skin to eliminate dry skin
  • Use a gentle cleanser on your skin, not soap

Can CBD lotions and creams help with eczema?

Yes, they can.  While there isn’t a lot of data from clinical information out there, some studies have been done showing it to be a potential option for skin conditions due to eczema. A 2019 study on the quality of life assessment in skin disorders, ‘A therapeutic effect of cbd-enriched ointment in inflammatory, skin diseases and cutaneous scars,’ done by the Department of General Surgery and Surgical Specialties, at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia Medical School, Surgical Clinic, was done in three months on CBD used on the skin condition.

Participants in the study saw improvement in their skin issues, particularly improvement in inflammation. So, yes, CBD ointment with no THC can be used as a noninvasive alternative for skin conditions for inflammatory issues.  While this study was done with CBD ointment, another study done in 2020 looked at CBD cream and eczema.  In this study more than half participants improved by using the CBD cream.

Even when creams work to improve skin conditions, you will need to use other products many times to control the problem, due to underlying conditions or simply for symptomatic relief.

Items to soothe your eczema:

  • Anti-histamines or other allergy medications
  • Anti-inflammatory supplements: MSM, quercetin, Turmeric or curcumin
  • Aloe Vera gel
  • Hydration gels
  • Thick non-perfume thick creams and lotions

Better understand what is causing the skin condition to begin with.  Understand if you have any allergies, pollutants, fabrics or just about anything that could be causing or contributing to your eczema outbreaks.

Potential environmental irritants that can lead to allergic reactions:

  • Extreme cold or hot temperatures
  • Facial creams, cleansers, soaps, shampoos, bubble baths
  • Laundry soaps
  • Fabrics—clothing to bedding (examples: linen, wool, polyester)
  • Harsh chemicals from cleaners
  • Heavy fragrances
  • Liquids from foods or drinks
  • Metal allergies: like, nickel
  • Formaldehyde (a preservative used in nail polishes and a variety of skin care and hair products, in in various manufacturing processes for other products; in testing facilities and labs for various uses)
  • Cocamidopropyl betaine (used for lotions and shampoos to make them thicker)
  • Paraphenylene-diamine (used in dyes for tattoos or leathers)

Always have OTC products to improve dry skin

There are many products on the market for eczema. Always have a few products for hydration and moisture for your skin on hand.  Severe dry skin can sometimes be a precursor to eczema and increasing B vitamins and vitamin C can help your skin along with immune and nervous system function.

For the majority of eczema sufferers, OTC products formulated for eczema can help reduce and rid of the condition.  Sometimes you might need more help, and a dermatologist can write a prescription strength product to help improve your eczema.
